SCOTTISH GAS 5km AND 10km RACES. GRANTON, EDINBURGH

SUNDAY, 1st AUGUST 2010.

While everyone else was enjoying the sunshine(!) in Fife, Wendy and Chris took part in the Granton 5km and 10km races respectively. These are lovely, friendly local races which for the last two years unfortunately coincide with Donkey Brae. Well organised by Edinburgh Athletic Club, the race is a straight forward run out and back from the Scottish Gas offices in Granton to Cramond with the 5km race simbly having a nearer turn-around point. Recommended. Warm and dry, if a bit breezy, weather, allowed the ERN ladies to have a good run and some good times to boot.

Chris said:   "As I couldn't make the Donkey Brae I decided to opt for a run one closer to home. Last year I did the 5k so in the interest of variety I opted for the 10k this year ... though it was a bit difficult to keep going and not swizzle round at the 5k marker!! Conditions were fine - a little breezy on the way out from the Scottish Gas HQ and I must admit I hoped for more of a tailwind on the way back along the Esplanade from Cramond! It was warm - but hey - who's complaining about that!

The course is really flat and I thought I was going really well - at the 5k mark I hit 22:33 on my watch ... very few folks were overtaking me and I thought - 'ya hoo onto a PB!' Word of warning ... don't ever be fooled by yer watch I say - it's yer legs and lungs that count - and with the sneaky two 'hills' (ok 'slopes' - but let's say 'hills' for effect) towards the end I just didn't do it. My 'boys' (Les and Ben) were there cheering me on at the end and then ... imagine my devastation when I crossed the line and looked at my watch ... 46:15 - one second slower than my PB! Ha ha! Still the bananas, biscuits and fabulous bright yellow t-shirt at the end cheered me up!

The race is very well organised and marshalled by some lovely folks ... though why they can't cut a few metres off the end I really don't know! That being said - if you can't make Donkey Brae - give it a go ... hopefully your PB 'tail' will be better than mine!"

Apart from a short sharp climb at the end, the route is very flat.

Nice medal, nice T-shirt, big glass!
