ANGUS HaM (HALF MARATHON), MONIKIE COUNTRY PARK

SUNDAY 26th APRIL 2009

Willie Stobie and Murdo Macleod travelled to Angus for the inaugral HaM, which was organised by the same people that brought us the D.R.A.M last year. Similarly, this was an excellent and enjoyable event. A rural humply course starting and finishing in the scenic Monikie Country Park. Friendly, scenic, well organised - what else could you want?

The Angus HaM (Half Marathon) is a new event organised by the same people that put on the excellent Dundee D.R.A.M last year that eight ERNs took part in. The HaM (not Steak!) starts and finishes in Monikie Country Park which lies to the North East just outside Dundee. The course is an anti-clockwise route that takes runners through Monikie Village, Wellbank, Kellas, Drumsturdy and Newbigging. The event is held on quiet rural roads, is an undulating course for all of the route but with a very distinct climb from mile 12 onwards to the finish. As it was an inaugural event, numbers will undoubtedly rise with positive feedback and as word-of-mouth spreads. The route was well organised; straight forward instructions issued by email beforehand, registration from 0930onwards, plenty parking, scenic venue. The organisers are to be congratulated on the running of the event; there were friendly marshals at each turn (all to the left except one where the Police assisted), water stations (with bottles) at 3, 6, 8.5 and 11 miles on the route, with first aid points at the start/finish and mile 6. Also jelly babies at the last two points! The event wasn’t chipped but times were accurate. It stayed dry throughout, if slightly overcast, with the rain starting after the runners were in. In short, an excellent, well organised and very friendly new event. A challenging course but worth the effort – highly recommended.
